Liposuction vs. Tummy Tuck: What’s the Difference?
Both liposuction and tummy tucks can improve the shape and contour of your waist and abdominal area. Both are cosmetic surgical procedures; however, each procedure is performed differently and has different results. Knowing the differences between these procedures and knowing what goals you want to achieve will help you and your doctor decide which procedure is best for you.
Liposuction for the Abdomen
Liposuction is a less invasive procedure when compared to the tummy tuck. In fact, more modern liposuction procedures, like vibration-supported lipo, only require local anesthesia.
Vibration-supported liposuction involves inserting cannulas, or metal straw-like instruments, into small incisions. The quick vibrations of the cannulas help break the fat apart and suction it out of the body.
Liposuction is a great option for people who are close to their ideal body weight, have good skin elasticity, and have localized areas of fat they want removed.
Unlike many modern liposuction procedures, a tummy tuck is a much more invasive surgery. It requires general anesthesia. During the procedure, excess fat and skin are removed. Muscles are also tightened. Therefore, this procedure may be best if you have excessive amounts of loose skin and loosened muscles. People who have lost a lot of weight or women after pregnancy can benefit from this procedure.
Recovery time is also longer with a tummy tuck. The resulting scar runs from hip to hip, but it is kept low to hide it behind underwear and swimsuits.
Which is Best for You?
It depends on your goals and if you are a candidate for either. Some doctors recommend starting with liposuction first, because it is less invasive and has a shorter recovery time. However, depending on your skin elasticity and state of your abdominal muscles, a tummy tuck may be a better option.
