How Does Botox® Work to Reduce Wrinkles?
Botox is one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatments. Millions of people receive Botox injections each year. The main use of Botox is to treat and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines near the eyes and forehead.
How Does Botox Work?
Botox isn’t able to treat all types of wrinkles. It mainly improves the appearance of dynamic wrinkles. Everyone has dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles form when your facial muscles move – such as when you smile, frown, or squint. Unfortunately, these wrinkles become more pronounced with age.
Botox (botulinum toxin) is injected in extremely small concentrations and reduces wrinkles by paralyzing the underlying muscles. In order for muscles to move and contract, our nerves release chemical messengers called neurotransmitters. More specifically, acetylcholine is the neurotransmitter that is released, and it attaches to receptors on muscle cells to cause them to contract and move.
Botox prevents the release of this neurotransmitter in the treated area, and therefore inhibits muscle contraction in that area. With less muscle contraction in these treated areas, the face relaxes and wrinkles smooth out and soften.
Patients often begin to see the results of a Botox treatment within 24-48 hours. The results can last up to 4 months.
