Will My Fat Come Back After Liposuction?
Liposuction is a popular and effective cosmetic procedure used to remove unwanted fat deposits. These fat deposits are often stubborn and do not respond well to diet and exercise. When considering if liposuction is the right procedure for you, you may be concerned with how long the results will last and if the fat will return.
Fat is Permanently Removed During Liposuction
During the liposuction procedure, the doctor inserts a cannula to break up and suction out the unwanted localized fat. A few pounds of fat can be removed; however, the actual amount will vary patient to patient. When the fat is removed, it will be permanently gone from the treated location. The adult body does not readily produce fat cells. However, there is an exception to this. Gaining a significant amount of weight can cause the body to produce fat cells in the previously treated area.
It is important to note that although the fat is gone, you still can gain weight from a poor diet or lack of exercise. With smaller amounts of weight gain, the remaining fat cells will expand to accommodate the extra fat and weight. You may also find that you carry weight in places you didn’t before. Therefore, if you want to maintain the lipo results, it is important to keep an ideal body weight after the liposuction procedure.
Maintenance Tips for Post-Liposuction Results
- Follow all instructions provided by your doctor (such as wearing a compression garment and when to start exercising)
- Maintain a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables. Limit processed sugars and saturated fats. Don’t go over your recommended daily caloric intake. Avoid fast food and eating out at restaurants. If you do eat out, opt for healthy, lower-calorie meals.
- Exercise regularly. You may have to start off slow with low impact exercises – such as walking. Ask your doctor when you can start more strenuous exercises.
