Are You a Candidate for Liposuction?
Many of us have problem areas of stubborn fat that just won’t go away – even with exercise and diet. Common problem areas on women include extra fat deposits on the hips, abdomen, thighs, and arms. Men, on the other hand, often see unwanted fat on their abdomen, chest, and neck. Liposuction (lipo) can be an effective method for removing these stubborn areas of fat.
Good Candidates for Lipo
Liposuction is not an ideal procedure for obesity or significant weight loss. Most lipo procedures are limited to removing only a few pounds of fat at a time. However, if you are near a normal body weight but have localized areas of fat deposits, you may be a good candidate for liposuction.
Additionally, an ideal candidate has good skin elasticity. Age, sun damage, and major fluctuations of weight can affect the elasticity of your skin. Skin elasticity affects the final results of lipo. The more elastic your skin, the smoother and more natural your skin will look after the procedure.
Also, an ideal candidate is someone who is healthy enough to undergo the procedure. For example, if you have immunodeficiency diseases, life threatening illnesses, or blood clots, you may not be healthy enough for liposuction.
Realistic Expectations of Lipo
Along with being a good candidate for liposuction in the physical sense, you also need to have the right mindset and realistic expectations. For example, you shouldn’t expect to lose a lot of weight. However, areas that had stubborn fat will now look more aesthetically pleasing.
Additionally, once the fat is removed, fat cells should not grow back in that area (as long as you don’t gain a significant amount of weight). If you gain a small amount of weight, the fat cells may become bigger, but new fat cells should not grow back. Also, if you gain weight after lipo, you may notice fat distributes differently in your body. Therefore, it is important to maintain a healthy body weight after the procedure.
Another important expectation to know is how long it will take to see results. Some people who receive liposuction see the results immediately. However, on average, most people see the results within 3 months. This is because there may be some swelling in the treatment area for a few weeks.
